CEMETERY HISTORY

Salem’s cemetery is one of the oldest in the area.  In fact, many headstones are just stones with no dates or names. It is not uncommon to see young infants’ and children’s headstones because of the sicknesses that plagued the population in the 1800s.

It is known that Civil War veterans have been buried here along with World War I and World War II veterans.  Many generations of families have been laid together such as: Kearns, Nance, Elliot, Cranford and Steed family names, just to name a few.  There is a portion of the cemetery grounds where several unknown graves are.  It is believed to be those of slaves, however, no one knows for certain.
